Which Natural Health Treatments Can Help PCOS? Many natural therapies have been subject to research and testing to see whether they do have an impact on a person's health and/or specific illnesses and medical problems. Local to me, there is an ongoing Reflexology program at the main hospital for those suffering with fertility problems, especially due to PCOS. Reflexology involves the application of pressure and movement to the feet and hands to effect corresponding parts of the body. There has been great success in this program. Some cynics say it is simply down to the relaxation effect of the reflexology while supporters of natural health point to the treatment's ability to target specific parts of body and enable the proper flow of the body's energies. Either way it has enjoyed a good success rate in helping women become pregnant. Other therapies you might consider that work in a similar way to Reflexology are acupressure, acupuncture, and massage therapy. The reason you may have heard natural health treatments or complementary therapies also called holistic medicine, is because they aim to treat the patient by understanding them as a "whole" - body, mind and spirit. Some practitioners you may choose to consult with include: - Kinesiologists, who use muscle testing to identify imbalances in the body and discover what the body needs for healing. They may utilize various methods when working with a patient such as nutrition, acupressure, flower remedies and affirmations. There are many branches of kinesiology and you should seek a practitioner who deals with therapeutic kinesiology. - Herbalists, who as the name suggests use herbs and medicinal plants to treat the patient as a whole, seeking to treat the underlying causes of any disease or illness, with an aim to prevent disease and help the body to heal itself. Herbal medicine is safe and effective when prescribed by a fully qualified herbal practitioner. - Homeopaths, who practice the gentle, holistic system of Homeopathy. This is based on the theory of treating "like with like" i.e. using highly diluted natural substances that if given in stronger doses on a healthy person would produce the symptoms you are experiencing. Homeopaths will take into account physical, emotional and lifestyle factors when prescribing. This is a very subtle and gentle therapy and probably the only one mentioned here that cannot be practised in conjunction with any drugs you have been prescribed. Finally, I should give a mention to Quantum BioFeedback, which I only learned about from the PCOS Uncovered interview with Dr Brodbeck. This is a relatively new development in alternative therapies and works by sending electro-magnetic signals through the body to discover: blockages in energy, deficiencies, weaknesses, allergies, and vulnerabilities, as well as positive aspects of your body, Once the problems are identified biofeedback can help to re-dress those problems and a number of other natural health methods may also be used to treat the patient. Many people find natural health therapies hard to accept as they can seem a bit airy-fairy or "new age." You may also find those around you are cynical about the results you might see. However, everyday patients experience good, lasting results with alternative medicine and, particularly if you've tried all the conventional medical paths, what have you got to lose? Open your mind and enjoy the many benefits these therapies can offer. To your good health! Lisa P.S. Again, let me stress that you should only consult with an experienced practitioner for your Natural Health needs. ------------------------------------------------------- Medical Disclaimer: All of the information contained in these emails and any associated electronic publications, to include electronic books ("eBooks"), newsletters and links are provided for educational and entertainment purposes ONLY.
