Hair Razing

Jim McIntosh held his breath as Kelli Taylor prepared to snip off his 15 inch ponytail.

"Is it going to hurt?" he asked.

Then it was over, the hair he had been growing for four years was gone, but for a good cause. McIntosh donated the hair to Locks of Love, which uses donated hair to make wigs for children with cancer.

McIntosh, 58, got his hair cut and his belly length beard trimmed at Spring Renewal Center for Health and Beauty in Saugatuck on Sunday.

"It feels a lot different, I can feel wind," McIntosh said as he shook his head.

While the salon has done more than a dozen cuts for Locks of Love since it opened in 2000, McIntosh's was a little different. Suffering from muscular dystrophy, McIntosh is in a wheelchair and a salon chair needed to be removed to make space.

McIntosh, who lives at The Harbors Health Facility in Douglas, said he heard about Locks of Love through one of his care providers.

"It was just time for a change, and one of the women that works up there (The Harbors) donated some, and that's what got me thinking about it," McIntosh said.

When McIntosh came in for his cut and shave, cosmetologist Taylor had a look in mind for him - Magnum P.I. form the 1980's television show.

"I'll probably look more like a pirate than a Magnum," McIntosh said with a laugh.

Perry Dickinson, a massage therapist and reflexologist at the salon, said the ponytail will be mailed into Locks of Love to be made into a wig.

"It's great when we get to do things like this," Dickinson said about Locks of Love haircuts. "Some times it's really cute because we get young girls who come in and then aren't sure they really want to get their hair cut."

Locks of Love is a Florida based nonprofit organization that provides hair pieces to children around the country.
